I was born, raised and educated in Limerick city. For me there can no greater honour than to serve as its 809th mayor. Limerick is both an ancient and beautiful place of heritage and culture and a modern vibrant city pulsating to the rhythms of the 21st century. Limerick is a successful city. We are the fastest growing major urban centre in Ireland. Limerick is a youthful city. Half our population is under the age of 35. That youthful energy finds expression in music, in the arts, and in what is quite simply the best nightlife to be found anywhere in Ireland. Limerick is a city of learning. One person in six living in Limerick is a fulltime third level student. Researchers at the University of Limerick have already discovered a cure for certain forms of cancer and are working on projects as varied as Laser Doppler Vibrometry and an analysis of US Foreign Policy. Limerick is a multi-cultural city. One person in five living in the city centre is foreign born. Our first Polish pub opened earlier this year, to compliment our many fine Indian, Chinese, Thai, Malaysian and Italian restaurants, our African shops and our Russian foodstores. Our local newspaper, the Limerick Leader now prints weekly columns in Chinese, Russian, and Polish. Limerick is a city of sporting excellence. Our rugby clubs are second to none; our hurlers and Gaelic footballers represent their city with pride and distinction, our Olympians Sam Lynch and Andy Lee are wonderful ambassadors for the city, and in a range of alternative sports from skateboarding, to powerlifting, to fencing Limerick men and women have won national and international titles. Limerick people take a great pride in our past and in the many achievements of this great city, but it is my firm belief that our best days lie ahead of us. I have no doubt that working together we can make Limerick an even more wonderful place in which to live. I am looking forward to continue working on your behalf and justifying your trust while continuing to work for our community.
